Some of the Copperbelt's top metallurgical minds converged on Kitwe for a copper solvent extraction and electrowinning workshop last week to learn, discourse and share operational experiences from across Zambia and the DRC.
Offered by South African metallurgical consultancy, CM Solutions, the focus of the workshop was professional development and exposure to operational knowledge from around the world.
The workshop was developed and presented by Dr Kathy Sole and Dr Frank Crundwell in response to a need for knowledge exchange in this highly specialised area of hydrometallurgy. "We were very lucky to have the calibre of a world class expert in Dr Sole leading the discussions," says Dr Crundwell, "which combined with the expertise of the delegates, and their willingness to engage, ensured in a lively interactive forum with very deep discussions on how to improve operations."
Dr Sole and Dr Crundwell collectively have more than 50 years of experience in hydrometallurgy and more particularly in solvent extraction and electrowinning. Dr Sole trained in Arizona and has worked in South Africa, Chile and the Congo. Dr Crundwell has worked world-wide in both research, industry and design environments, and has presented professional courses to more than a thousand engineers.
Engineers from the following mining companies: Kansanshi, Chambishi, Mutanda, Kamoto Copper, Tiger Congo and Ruashi, as well as chemical suppliers to the mining industry, Protea Chemicals and BASF, attended.
